I made a couple other paintings before this one which had no face. I started doing this to show that it wasn’t a portrait of anyone in particular, but rather a painting of the Everywoman. Even if I made up a face it would still look like I was painting someone in particular.

To tell this story, you had to see the whole cosmos inside her. The faceless divine mother of all is the very spirit of nature. She is faceless because she is represented in everything and without a specific identity or specific presence. Her feminines spirit is you and the tree and the animals of this land and the air we breathe.
