The Evolution of a Painting

My newest video documents the unexpected evolution of a painting. What I thought was going to be a demo on decalcomania turned into something entirely different. I had no vision or predetermined concept in mind, and I definitely didn’t intend to paint a bright, almost psychedelic painting. So how did this happen?

I don’t know where these things come from but I do know that it’s best to just get in the flow and trust the process. I don’t ask questions, I just follow orders. I’m not the boss, I’m just the brush holder.

There is very little commentary in the video; mostly what you see here is about 12 hours of work compressed into just 8 minutes of sped up timelapse painting. I captured almost every moment of the paintings evolution so you can really see how it changed, and you can see how I clearly didn’t have a plan.

I know that half way into the painting I decided that it was too dingy and need more color, so that was the main point that transitioned the work from the lecture laden decalcomania piece into the bright trippy thing that it became.

My advice to those who wish to get lost in the creative process: Follow the flow and the mystery that the creative process lays out before you. It's different every time and relying too much on a formula may lead you away from discovery and the satisfaction of uncovering the unexpected and new. Making art should not be a by-the-books endeavor, it should be risky and at least a little wild and messy. Above all, it should be FUN!
