Power Grace and Wisdom
This summer, as the west coast was covered in wild fires I was in the middle of a large painting that was feeling stagnant and uninspired. I had been pushing paint around for a couple weeks and no distinct vision had yet come, it was purely abstract. So I put it aside and moved on to other things…
Then one evening I pulled it out and started randomly painting over it with a large brush, basically destroying it in the hopes of spurring a rebirth of some kind. I thought for a moment that it might be simply a forest scene but suddenly an owl started to appear. Then other animals wanted to be in the scene too.
The concept of spirit animals fleeing from the fires came to mind as I thought about how so many creatures were being destroyed and displaced by the fires. This work is not meant to be a commentary on humans causing destructive fires or on global warming. This is not a political piece. It’s simply a prayer for the animals, and a nod to the circle of life and natures natural cycle of destroy and rebuild.
This new painting “The Power Wisdom and Grace” is acrylic on canvas, 48x48 inches.
